 MetaDater Presentations 2005

1st. International Conference on e-Social Science - 22-24 June 2005, Manchester, UK

Three presentations from partners of the MetaDater project were held

Wednesday 22 June at the workshop
From Metadata Standards to the Data GRID for Comparative Social Research
organised by Ekkehard Mochmann
http://www.ncess.ac.uk/events/conference/2005/workshops/#mochmann

Social Research needs easier access to all types of empirical evidence to better understand socio-political and economical developments of future societies. Considerable infrastructure progress has been made developing contemporary internet and data base technologies. There is world leading experience and expertise in the networks of social science data services to advance the field of GRID empowered knowledge infrastructure. These developments are key technologies for research infrastructures, official statistics and commercial market and opinion research as well as for participatory models of modern democracies.

Much progress in social research has been theory driven and was powered by technological progress. As of today, future scenarios of social monitoring demand multilevel analyses of macro- and micro-data in meaningful contexts. Vast amounts of data and literature are continuously produced in dispersed data bases. Their metadata, interoperability and accessibility must be further improved beyond current Internet portal technologies.

At the same time micro data from statistical counts and representative sample surveys must be complemented by other types of evidence, e. g. from the analysis of textual, visual and sound representations of social action, as well as evidence form event data bases. Computing GRID technology will allow seamless integration of evidence from different sources and will support visualisation in socio-graphic maps.

In order to advance the field interoperability of data bases must be improved by metadata standards and appropriate documentation of measurement instruments as well as of related data. This session will present recent developments in the field of Social research laying the ground for the social science data GRID:

Presentations:

The presentations yielded substantial encouragement of the conceptual results and the initial project idea to model metadata along with the life cycle of a comparative study.

IASSIST / IFDO conference 24-27 May 2005, Edinburgh, Scotland

Four presentations from the MetaDater project were held
Friday 27 May during the session

H2: Shaping Metadata Insight: The MetaDater Tool

In the Friday session specific focus was given to the conceptual data model of metadata. Questions from the audiences reflected great interest to the presented conceptual approaches to manage the interrelation of single datasets to achieve finally an integrated documentation of a comparative study on its most complex level of the space & time level. Participants of the session showed as well great interest on the project software and the functions to document and exchange metadata between data collector and data provider along the study life-cycle.

 MetaDater Presentations 2004

Workshop Athens, 5 November 2004
"Node for Secondary Analysis and elaboration of socio-economic data”

on the Greek Social Data Bank and current implemented projects organised by the Research Support Directorate of EKKE. The following presentations referred to the implementation of MetaDater project. :
- Secondary analysis and research infrastructures by J.Kallas,
- Issues of access and use of socio-economic data by D. Kondyli ,
- Thematic classification and its contribution in searching social data at European level  by Ch.Kappi

MADIERA Workshop 22nd-23rd June 2004, Essex University, UK

Reto Hadorn (SIDOS) presented the MetaDater project with specific focus on metadata capture and processing according to its first occurrence in the study life-cycle and the related research process.

2nd. Conference on Social and Economic Data, 4./5. June 2004 Wiesbaden, Germany

Conference objective was to foster the development of the data infrastructure for the Social and Economic sciences in Germany (http://www.ratswd.de/).

A specific forum was held Saturday, 5th on "Metadata“ chaired by E. Mochmann. He introduced the session under the header “Metadata for the social science: From Standards to Implementation“. He presented the DDI initiative developing an international standard to document social science data. The importance of such a standard provides the base for the interoperability of social science data base referenced as well by recent developments like the MetaDater and MADIERA project.

U. Jensen (project manager) presented the MetaDater project under the header "Data models and instruments to document comparative studies". Special attention was paid to the conceptual data model of metadata and the scope of functions to document and exchange metadata between data collector and data provider. Questions from the audience showed great interest on the project products. There are various developments under way with high demand for a data model and metadata standards.

DDI Alliance Expert meeting (29.05.2004), Madison, Wisconsin USA
A report of the recent project work was given by M. Moschner (ZA) and Reto Hadorn (SIDOS). Both staff are member of the related work groups of the DDI.

CSDI - Second International Workshop April 1-3, 2004, Paris (INED)

The International Workshop on Comparative Survey Design and Implementation (CSDI) was founded in 2002 in Brussels at a meeting of researchers active in cross-national or cross-cultural survey research. The main goal of CSDI is improve comparative survey design, implementation and related analysis. The workshop provides a forum and platform for researchers involved in research relevant for comparative survey methods. Work groups (taskforces) were set up at the first meeting to encourage and facilitate cooperation on different key issues.

Presentation of the MetaDater project under the perspective of Standards and Tools to document comparative surveys by E. Mochmann and U. Jensen at French National Institute for Demographics (April 1st. 2004).
general report - programme - presentations; list of participants and their biosketches

INED, Paris, 29.1.2004 (Reto Hadorn, SIDOS)

«Journée d’information sur l’archivage historique et la mise à disposition des données d’enquêtes en sciences humaines et sociales »,
This session was aimed at informing data professionals about the efforts done at archiving data and caring for appropriate metadata. MetaDater was one of the tools presented.
